Turning discarded furniture into art

Studio Lemercier

Studio Lemercier is a Brussels-based creative studio co-directed by artist Joanie Lemercier and curator Juliette Bibasse, specializing in light-based installations that project onto unconventional surfaces like water mist and custom structures. Their work explores nature through mathematics, science, and technology, creating abstract environments that transform into majestic digital landscapes while prioritizing environmental consciousness and alternative art-making processes.

Material

Studio Lemercier works with reclaimed wood salvaged from discarded furniture pieces collected throughout their Brussels neighborhood. Through careful selection and preparation, they transform boards from broken tables, abandoned cabinets, and worn chairs into canvases for artistic expression. This approach directly challenges the disposable furniture culture, giving new purpose to materials destined for incineration or landfill while preserving the history embedded in each piece of wood.

Working Environment

Based in Brussels for over a decade, Studio Lemercier operates from their established creative space. Co-directed by artist Joanie Lemercier and curator Juliette Bibasse, the studio has evolved beyond their signature light projections to embrace new forms of sustainable art-making. Their workspace now accommodates both digital projection equipment and wood processing tools, creating a hybrid environment where environmental consciousness drives innovative artistic processes.

Products

Under their experimental wood engraving project, Studio Lemercier creates unique art pieces that merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary digital techniques. Each engraved panel tells a dual story - both of the furniture's previous life and its transformation into art. These works extend the studio's exploration of nature and technology, now literally carved into salvaged materials. The project represents a new direction for the studio, complementing their light installations with tangible, lasting objects that embody their environmental values.

Machine Setup

The Mekanika Pro CNC serves as the precision tool that enables Studio Lemercier's vision of transforming reclaimed furniture pieces collected from the street into original art pieces. Working alongside custom G-code generators and collaborative partnerships with local makers, the CNC allows for detailed engravings that would be impossible to achieve by hand. This technological integration maintains the studio's commitment to innovation while supporting sustainable art practices, proving that environmental consciousness and the digital world can work in harmony.
